Caring for Porcelain Tableware and Teaware
Porcelain is hard and hygienic, but a few simple habits will keep it looking its best for years.
Everyday washing
- Wash with warm water, mild detergent and a soft sponge.
- Avoid steel wool and abrasive powders, which can dull the glaze and scratch painted decoration.
- For teaware, rinse with hot water after use; stubborn tea stains can be lifted with a paste of baking soda and water.
Dishwasher and microwave
Many plain glazed porcelain pieces tolerate dishwashers and microwaves, but this depends on the individual product. Items with gold or silver lines must never go in the microwave, and overglaze enamels (such as famille rose) are best washed by hand. Always follow the information given for each product; where it is not yet confirmed, treat the piece as hand-wash only.
Temperature changes
Sudden temperature changes are the most common cause of cracks. Do not pour boiling water into a piece straight from the refrigerator, and let hot dishes cool before washing them in cold water.
Storing and displaying
- Stack plates with a soft separator (a paper napkin or felt pad) to protect the glaze.
- Hang cups on hooks only if the handles are sturdy; otherwise store them upright.
- Display plates on stands or secure wall fixings, away from direct sunlight and busy walkways.
